Color Match Wrap Application Guide
Color Match Wrap is pressure-sensitive automotive OEM paint color matching vinyl. This guide explains how to practice, prepare the surface, apply the film, handle curves, and care for the finished installation.
For best results, start with a small practice piece before applying Color Match Wrap to the final part.
Before You Start
Work on a clean, dry surface at 70-85 degrees F (20-30 degrees C). Start with the simplest section of the project and move to more difficult shapes after you are comfortable handling the film.
If you are new to wrapping, use a practice sheet first. A practice sheet may be requested with larger orders or ordered at checkout when available. The practice sheet may be any color and is intended for learning the material and testing difficult shapes.
Always test a small piece on the surface before wrapping a large area, especially on chrome, softer paint, older paint, or unusual finishes.
Tools And Materials
Recommended tools and materials:
- Clean microfiber cloths
- Gentle automotive soap or suitable surface cleaner
- Felt-covered squeegee
- Mild electric heat gun
- Optional Color Match Wrap Tack Reducer
- Optional Color Match Wrap NanoCoat
- Optional knifeless tape for inset pieces and seams
- Sharp blade or knife only when needed and only with care
Do not use a torch. Use only mild heat from an electric heat gun.
Important Application Rules
Do not over-stretch Color Match Wrap. Use light, even tension to make the film smooth before applying it. Do not heat the film and then stretch it.
Color Match Wrap uses pressure-sensitive adhesion. It may not feel fully bonded at first placement. Adhesion is completed by firm pressure from a felt-covered squeegee or microfiber cloth.
Tack Reducer can reduce initial adhesion while practicing or working on difficult shapes. It can also help on some chrome or softer paint surfaces. It will reduce adhesion strength, so test first and decide whether it suits the project.
NanoCoat can help protect the vinyl and make application smoother by helping a squeegee or cloth glide over the surface.
Practice First
- Clean a flat surface and place a small piece of vinyl at the recommended temperature range.
- Anchor one edge of the film.
- Hold the film with light, even tension until it looks smooth.
- Hinge the film down onto the surface.
- Use a felt-covered squeegee or microfiber cloth to work bubbles and wrinkles toward the edge.
- If the film wrinkles or bunches, lift it from the surface while keeping one edge anchored.
- Suspend the film above the surface and warm it gently with a heat gun. The film should relax back toward its original shape. You can also watch the practice video: Color Match Wrap practice video.
- Practice again until you can apply a small piece smoothly.
- Move to a curved practice area before applying film to the final project.
Apply Color Match Wrap
- Clean the part thoroughly and make sure it is dry.
- Test a small piece on the surface before wrapping the full area.
- Start with the simplest section of the project.
- Position the film and anchor one edge.
- Use light, even tension to smooth the film without heat.
- Hinge the film down and apply it with firm squeegee pressure.
- Lift and reposition small areas as needed to remove bubbles or wrinkles.
- Use mild heat only to relax the film, not to stretch heated film.
- Use inset pieces on strongly curved or indented areas where too much film would bunch together.
- Use knifeless tape when it helps create a clean inset piece or seam.
- Post-heat curved areas with mild heat to confirm the installation is sound.
- Inspect edges, seams, and curves before finishing the job.
Troubleshooting
If the film wrinkles or bunches, lift it, keep one edge anchored, and warm it gently with a heat gun so the film can relax. Then try the application again.
If bubbles appear, lift the nearest edge if needed and work the bubbles out with a felt-covered squeegee or microfiber cloth.
If a surface has too much initial tack, test Tack Reducer on a small area before using it on the project.
For strongly curved areas, use multiple pieces or inset pieces instead of forcing one piece of film to cover every curve.
Care After Installation
Wash Color Match Wrap with gentle automotive soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Do not scrub with harsh soap or coarse fibers.
NanoCoat can be used regularly to help protect the vinyl, keep it easier to clean, and extend its useful life.
Paint Chip Stickers Note
Paint Chip Stickers use a different application workflow from larger Color Match Wrap panels. If a sticker is difficult to remove from the backing, stop and use a sharp edge carefully to lift the vinyl from the backing instead of forcing it with your finger.
Paint Chip Stickers do not need a separate install guide. Keep this note as quick guidance for sticker application, and use the larger Color Match Wrap steps above for panel and roll installations.
